Back / A League of Her Own

Background

A League of Her Own is a modern interpretation of a storied piece of Mystic, Connecticut maritime history. This work is based on the original figurehead carved by the renowned Colbie and Campbell for the vessel Frolic.

While the original ship's head captured the spirit of her namesake, this reimagining transports that figure into the late 18th century as a pioneer of early baseball. By blending the legendary craftsmanship of Mystic's golden age of shipbuilding with the burgeoning history of women in sport, this piece serves as a bridge between the rugged life of the sea and the spirited play of the field.
